Because harassment and discrimination can sometimes appear subtle or be disguised as “humor,” it's critical for employees and managers to recognize and address such behaviors promptly. This program uses a real-world scenario to illustrate how seemingly small or casual actions can have significant legal and professional consequences, and to encourage discussion about recognizing, preventing, and reporting inappropriate conduct in the workplace.

All communication and workplace interactions must comply with federal and state anti-harassment and anti-discrimination laws. Verbal conduct such as inappropriate jokes or comments can amount to unlawful harassment when they are unwelcome and interfere with an employee’s ability to work in a respectful and safe environment. Likewise, inappropriate emails - such as those containing offensive images, derogatory remarks, or jokes at the expense of colleagues - may create or contribute to a hostile work environment in violation of Title VII of the Civil Rights Act of 1964 and similar state statutes.
