It's around the holidays that we typically wax nostalgic. We remember friends, family, co-workers, pets... you name it... and these last few weeks of the year often remind us of it!
The holidays tend to give us a chance to pause and reflect. We often think about relationships as well as historical events that are woven into the very fabric of our lives and memories. It's a time to give thanks.
But the holidays are a terrific opportunity for growth and renewal. Renewing lost or forgotten relationships. Growth in terms of getting past an issue (or even a fight) with a friend or family member. Holidays give us a sort of "pass" card... an opportunity to mend things. Sure, this can happen any time of the year, but during the Thanksgiving, Christmas, Hanukkah, Diwali and Kwanzaa seasons, we tend to be closer in physical proximity to our loved (and sometimes not so loved) ones. This gives us a chance to talk. And respectful talk will mend all sorts of bridges we may have destroyed over the years. Respectful communication isn't lip service. It's listening. It's acknowledging one another. It's forgiving. It's moving on. It's rebuilding.
I am thankful for many things. But I also have a lot of work to do. There are folks I need to talk to. To actively listen to. To discuss things with. You see, if we make an effort, if we really try to reach those we've pushed away or even were rejected by, we create the potential for even better relationships. Better friendships. Inclusion works at home as well as the workplace. Remember that.
Giving thanks this holiday season shouldn't be lip service. It should be sincere. It should be uplifting. It should be from the heart.
