Evaluating Job-Related Experiences

The key to behavior-based interviewing is gaining behavioral predictors. It's beneficial to use past experiences to predict future behavior. So, it's very important what questions are asked during the interview. Interview questions should: identify job-related experiences to predict future behavior, evaluate applicant’s ability to perform job requirements, and flesh out examples of times when a job-related skill was used.

By staying focused on the job requirements, the interviewer is able to make an objective assessment of the candidate’s ability to do the job (e.g., get and stay past cognitive perspectives). Remember the importance of identifying requirements prior to interviewing applicants. We need to:

  • Identify competencies required by the job.
  • Assess skills during the interview.
